Need to invite a discussion that is very nuanced and varied. Our groups memberships = elementary parts of social identity. Social identity is rooted in group memberships and relationships. Our memberships in groups give us an important source of social identity. Memberships located us, they help root us, they help give us a sense of belonging/clarity in an otherwise messy world. Gives us a sense of understanding of where we fit in in the world. Ex. you are affiliated w/ uci source of pride, esteem important part of your identity. Every person is majoring in a subject at uci contributes to a sense a belonging on campus. Do you consider yourself as an american or foreigner, etc.
