Document Summary

One of the most human questions there is. Refers to the sources of a person"s social identity. Social identity: person"s sense of who they are that is rooted in their group memberships. Our group memberships are the elementary parts of our social identity. Our conception of identity is largely based on our group memberships. Don"t have to search far and wide about how they matter. Example: it matters to everyone in this room that they are affiliated with uci, what year they are in. Our group memberships give us an important sense of social identity. Give us a sense of belonging and community and clarity. Going to uci contributes to self-esteem and identity. Contributes to you feeling good about yourself. This image that we have of ourselves can increase/decrease when we compare ourselves to others. You might think you"re a better student than other csu students derive a good chunk of your self esteem from this idea.
