The essay firstly highlights the importance and power of the audience"s ole of interpretation in oral storytelling. Oral fairy tales have belong to the community due to the strong bond between the storytellers and listeners. In addition, oral storytelling would be modified to suit the time and audience"s needs when going through the process of transmission. Written fairy stories, on the other hand, tend to be more static in nature. Yet in literacy tale, william goldman still manages to use bunch of techniques to recreate many active traditions of oral storytelling, forcing the readers to participant more actively. One of the skills goldman extensively uses is the mention of the history, geography, and politics of a story to create communal validation. The blurring of fact and fiction somehow assimilates and immerses the reader into goldman"s fantastical story world, while drawing attention to the necessity for the reader to interpret the events of the story.
