Why study insects: entomology as subdiscipline of biology. Ecology: economic and medical importance of insects. Sleeping sickness: obtain such illness from tsetse flies (prevents human settlement in a lot of africa) Bacteria block the flea"s gut, so if the flea tries to suck blood from an organism the blood reaches the gut and then transfers back the bacteria. 2nd pandemic middle age: black death (1350 ad), nothern italy or asia of population died. 3rd pandemic (1890"s-now) probably originated from asia through rats or squirrels. ^^^^ all three diseases above (malaria, yellow fever, filariasis) come from the mosquito. Spanish fly (insect that can produce blisters on skin) More species of insects than plants and all other animals combined. Ants and termites: 40% of the weight of animals. 400/lba insects in us compared to 14 lb/a of humans. High reproductive potential: food for other organisms. Many species are step above producers in food chain.
