It is a major global problem, requires evaluation and revision of water resource policy. It is the leading worldwide cause of death/disease! 90% of china"s cities suffer from water pollution. Of world suffers from water pollution. Volatile organic compounds: large group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. (may be harmful!!!) Cellular respiration: a process in which the energy of organic molecules is released within cells. Excessive amounts of suspended soil particles (originates from erosion of agricultural lands forest soils, exposed by logging, degraded stream banks, strip mines, construction) Problems: limits light penetration, covers aquatic animals/plants, brings insoluble toxins in waterways. Affects water quality by carrying toxic chemicals (both inorganic and organic into the water) Fecal coliform test: water quality test for fecal bacteria indicates a chance that pathogenic organisms may be present as well. Enrichment (fertilization of water by high levels of phosphorus/nitrogen)
