Philosophy Notes – Monday, April 29, 2013 • Midterm • 12 questions, each is worth one point – 10 points • All questions will be short answer • A few words to 2 sentences (at most) • Study lecture notes; read key passages • Use paper writing to study • 15 minutes • No bluebooks • All Plato concepts (e.g. well-orderedness); concepts that reject conventional life; Thrasymachus‟ natural life • 5-6 Confucian concepts – zhong, shu, ren, li, yi • Moral spouts analogy • Concept on reflection and extension • Arguments, deduction, analogical/metaphorical reasoning, objections • What it means to be well ordered – desired, spiritedness; their functions and virtues • Re-read key passages and various selections (especially the ones talked about in lectures) • Everything should be doable in 15 minutes Virginia Held article • The Natural (Care) as a way of Life • Previously we examined a natural life exemplified by Thrasymachus – a life of aggression, causing others suffering, taking advantage of others, out-doing. • The portrait of Thrasymachus in the Republic is a caricature of ONE aspect of a natural, humaneness • The more aggressive side of our nature is easier to reject (Plato) – reductio ad absurdum (assume what the opposition thinks is true and point out a view common sense idea and it ends up in a contradiction) • Another type of natural life (not aggressive) • Relations/relationships of care • Care ethics is focusing on individuals vs. Confucianism is focusing on roles • Obligations and duties to individuals • Spousal relationships for example • If Professor Ramsey has a child, he‟d have duty towards the individual, not the daughter • Zhong – duty/obligation to a role • Obligations to students, TA‟s, department chair, etc. Virginia Held’s goal: seek greater clarity regarding the concept of care as it pertains to an ethics of care. Figuring out a concept of care with a purpose to do ethics (pay attention to concept of care to find out what it means to live a good life under this conception of care) Compared to philosophy in ancient Greece/China, things are done radically different; what we do in modern philosophy (analytic philosophy) • We worry about concepts; getting clear of what‟s important/logically required for a concept • Held wants to understand concept of care for 30-35 years since writing of article • Wants to see if she wants to come up with a good definition • Book 1 of the Republic – they want to find definition of justice Most of the article is a discussion of whether existing accounts measure up the idea of care. She frames this “measuring up” in terms of addressing problematics – Like book 1 of the elenchus – showing flaws of the claim • Held sees if accounts measure up to various problems: • Explanation is in the fourth paragraph of the article • What do we mean by “care” (the concept) in an ethics of care? (p. 59-63) • Is the definition we give sufficient for living a good life/doing ethics? • Is care an attitude/feeling, a form of labor or work? • Can the conception we offer as an answer to (1) ground an ethics (p. 63-68) • Is the concept of care normative or value-laden to generate moral obligations? • Held is a contemporary, Analytic philosopher (analyzes a concept) • Look for its necessary (it is required) and sufficient (it is enough) conditions, • What is required for someone to be a bachelor?
