Violence appears to be widespread across the developing world: Religious insurgencies in nigeria (boko haram) and somalia. Terrorist organizations in the middle east (al queda and isis) Many countries confront ethnic and political tensions, but only some erupt into civil wars. Political violence is the use of force by states or non- state actors to achieve political goals. Since wwii, most political violence in the developing world has occurred within states. All states use violence in order to maintain law and order. In non-democratic regimes, rulers use excessive violence (repression, order to consolidate power torture, ) in. A civil war is an armed combat within the boundaries of a sovereign state between parties that are subject to common authority at the start of hostilities. One of the parties in a civil war is the state. Civil wars last for a sustained period of time at least a year and accumulate a certain number of casualties at least 1,000 deaths .
