Conception occurs when the sperm fertilizes the egg and forms a zygote: mitosis- occurs in the first 1-2 weeks. Zygote travels down tubes to the uterus, and is called an embryo. Blood vessels grow and the placenta is formed. Fetus weighs around 6 pounds at 36 weeks. All organ systems are developed enough that it could survive outside mother"s uterus at 37 weeks. Full size at 40 weeks: prenatal care- medical care during pregnancy. Fine motor skills- muscles in fingers, toes, and eyes. Gross motor skills- large muscles groups such as arms and legs: children understand how things work before they experience them, usually around 3 months old. Avoidant- unresponsive, doesn"t care if mother leaves and ignores the parent upon return. Permissive style- child controls the show, no bedtime, etc. Primary sexual characteristics- organs specifically needed for reproduction secondary sexual characteristics- physical signs of maturation.
