Aldoses include glucose and ketoses include fructose. The irst carbon in an aldose is typically an aldehyde and the second carbon in a ketose is typically a ketone. If the hydroxyl group is to the right, a sugar is classiied as d-sugar. If the hydroxyl group is to the right on a sugar, it is called a l-sugar. D-sugars are more biologically abundant than l-sugars. Epimers difer only on the coniguraion of one carbon atom. Hemiacetal and hemiketal occur because of an addiion of an alcohol to the carbonyl group. On the right for oh on a fischer projecion, it will point downward on the structure. Stereoisomers are 2^n where n is the number of chiral centers. Beta forms have the oh groups on the same side.
