Chapter 7 class notes: purpose of criminal law- to punish an offender for causing harm to public health, safety, or morals. Society is the victim: actus reus- a guilty act. The government must establish the non-mental elements of the crime. And demonstrate that the prohibited act or consequence resulted because of the defe(cid:374)da(cid:374)t"s a(cid:272)tio(cid:374)s: mens rea- a guilty mind. The government must prove that the defendant acted with either purpose, knowledge, recklessness, or negligence. Strict liability- only type of crime that allows punishment without proof of a guilty mind. Robbery- forceful and lawful taking of personal property. Burglary- occurs when someone unlawfully enters a building with the intent to commit a felony. Larceny- the secretive and wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal property of another with the intent to permanently deprive the rightful owner of its use or possession.
