Eastern germany and western germany (berlin was divided between communist and non-communist by a wall) 3rd world, non-aligned: democracies, autocracy, royalist, etc, (we no longer use this system) Western european recovery: marshall plan (the u. s. gave a lot of money to help rebuild europe, social reforms, national planning, labor pool, free trade, eec european economic community, european union (eu) economic cooperation. Eastern european recovery: heavy industry, less emphasis on agriculture and consumer goods, social programs provided. Soviet union and post war eastern europe: soviet liberated states became buffer zone for ussr, local communists gained control through elections. Consolidated soviet control in eastern europe: ussr economic and military power restored by 1950 (only five years after the war ended, warsaw pact (wp) control. Eastern european governments had little popular support: yugoslavia. Never controlled by stalin, neutral by 1965: stalin dies 1953, krushchev ruled 1955-1964 goulash communism, less censorship. Cuban missile crisis 1962: brezhnev ruled 1964-1982.
