Development is predictable there is an orderly sequence. Nouns before pronouns before adjectives : developmental milestones are attained about the same age range. Most first true words occur about 12 months. Most babies walk around 12 months: there are ranges but all is considered within normal range, developmental opportunity is needed. Children must have the opportunity for learning: play, exposure, repetition, developmental phases and periods are expected. Development occurs in spurts: biggest growth spurt is prenatal to 6 months, the 10/12 to 15/16 years. Language areas also occur in phases: initially lexicon/vocabulary development. Lexicon growth slows when syntax starts to develop: development is an individual process. Normative data is used as a guide.
