Document Summary

Understanding and interpreting results in media to differentiate bacterial species. Phenylethanol inhibitor of gram - ability to grow with pea. Sel for gram - diff for lactose ferm. Colonies absorb dyes by the low ph caused from lactose ferm. Red dye is absorbed into acid producing colony during lactose ferm. Dark colony: lactose ferm (mb dye absorbs by high acid production) Pink colony: lactose ferm(absorbs eosin by low acid production) Detect lipase (hydrolyzes lipids to fatty acids and glycerol) Milk (containing opaque casein) loss or retention of opacity. Fatty acid release lowers ph and blue dye intensifies= (+) Detect gelatinase(hydrolyzes gelatin protein into amino acids) gelatin. Detect nitrate reductase (nitrase) (converts nitrate to nitrite) Add nitrate i & ii , zinc dust (after growth) (10 drops each) look for. 5 to 6 rxns can be read in litmus milk** Detect tryptophanase (hydrolyses tryptone to indole) (indole is what is tested for)
