MCB 2004C Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Trypticase Soy Agar, Neisseria, Hemolysis
Document Summary
Blood agar trypticase soy agar containing 5% sheep red blood cells. Same as blood agar, but the blood cells are added to the trypticase soy agar at a higher temperature (which causes it to be brown). Contains phenol red ph indicator and the sugar lactose. Made up of peptone, beef extract, and potentially sugar alcohol mannitol. It will support the growth of most bacteria encountered in patient specimens; It is more nutrient rich then blood agar, allowing it to be readily available to nutritionally fastidious bacteria. Gram-negative bacteria, and to differentiate between lactose fermenters and non-fermenters. Developed to encourage the growth of staphylococci (gram-positive cocci clusters) and differentiate pathogenic from nonpathogenic members of the genus. Nonselective: its is a general purpose medium; enriched medium. Yes: because is can detect and differentiate the hemolysis patterns of streptococci. (beta, alpha, Selective: for gram-negative bacteria because it contains bile and the dye crystal violet, both of which inhibit.
