It is the cause that makes object to change their state of motion (or their shape). Frictional Forces: o Due to the roughness of surfaces When you hold a book between your hands, the force that holds it in place is friction. Inertia: resistance, not a force. Isaac Newton (1642-1727) extended Galileos findings and realized how to use forces to understand motion. He was first a student and then a professor at Cambridge University. Forces of everyday Life (Force Inventory): Weight: The force by which the Earth pulls every massive object towards its center) Normal Forces: The forces between surfaces touching each other. They are normal to the surface and they are always present. Friction: The forces between two surfaces trying to rub against each other. They are parallel to the surface and they are present only if the surfaces are rough and the surfaces are trying to rub against each other due to other forces. Friction always tries to stop the relative motion of the surfaces against each other. Tensions from strings and ropes: they are pulling forces from ropes and are always parallel to the rope. Pushes or pulls: From people or from objects pushing each other. Forces from springs, otherwise called elastic forces. Newtons Laws: First Law: The Law of Inertia o A body at rest remains at rest and a body in motion will continue to move on a straight line with constant speed unless a net force acts on it. Has a constant velocity.
