SPA 3011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Front Vowel, Nasal Vowel, Nasal Consonant
Document Summary
Dr. ryalls (note: we will get our tests back wednesday!) Phonotactics: allowable sequences of phonemes in a particular language. ex/ brick, blick, bnick. Br is a possible sequence in english because brick" is a word. Bn is not a possible sequence, it is a constraint in english. The difference between phonetic and phonemic: pg 54. Surface representation: used to refer what the speaker says. Phone": used for the spoken, actually realized sound. /ae/ has two different allophones - nasal and unnasal. You test allophones by seeing if they are minimal pairs. R" and l" are two allophones of /l/ in korean and asian languages. We have difficulty making /y/ because rounded vowels are back vowels. Its not true for consonant because there are minimal pairs in english based on whether the consonant is nasal or not. Example: [m] and [b] are produced with the same place of articulation.
