Does anyone have an idea of what the difference is between //(cid:495)s and brackets [] in transcription: phonemic transcription is the basic ipa symbols, the fine details of the pronunciation are for narrow phonetic. Another area we can add is that speech science includes the study of speech disorders in addiction to normal speech production. We look at these disorders in a scientific manner in attempt to better understand the disorder and eventually provide better speech therapy. Stop consonants: bilabial, alveolar, velar, glottal (not a phoneme in most american dialects of english) Fricatives: labiodental, interdental, alveolar, palatal, glottal. Voice, place, and manner is the way a speech sound should be described in that order. Know chart on p. 32 for exam*** So how would we describe /g/: voiced, velar, stop. This is the way slp speech about speech sounds and you have to be conversant in this sound language.
