Most universities don"t have understudies or swings. This is mostly for broadway, where you must have understudies. Always at least two understudies per role. You can only understudy so many roles. Get at least 3 weeks of rehearsal, if you start late. You must have one female and one male swing. The understudy has the contractual right to go onstage when the role is open. All understudies are equal, and the producer chooses who goes on. Often like a back-up headliner , or someone with more experience. You can be an understudy, and a swing at the same time! You can be onstage in a role, and be an understudy. You can be offstage and understudy or swing roles. You can be onstage as a chorus member, and swing another chorus track or just part of the track (partial swing) Like, covering a specific line that is said by another ensemble member, but saying it as your ensemble character.
