Preferred beauty to technology (wanted to make things more beautiful rather than efficient) *in general, by 1911, most people in china were not doing well; extreme poverty. Feudal society based on powers of local daimyo. Portuguese arrived in 1543 (portuguese and dutch were focused on trade, not conquest) Christianity expands in japan in a way never seen in asia before. Began period of isolationism, lasting to mid 19th century. Banking, distribution networks established at end of period.
