Lec 13 - human impacts : ecosystem-human connections. Humans live within and depend on ecosystems the state of the planet"s natural systems has impacts on human health, well-being, and economic activity. Ecosystem services : the collective contributions that ecosystems make to human economic activity & daily life. As water moves through watersheds, forests, grasslands, and wetlands pollutants & sediments are often filtered out. Forests provide clean air not only by cycling carbon, but also by absorbing and processing air pollutants. 2: provision of food / fuels / raw materials. Although most global food production is from agriculture non-cultivated ecosystems also provide food. Ex. freshwater and marine fish = an important global food source) Wild-caught and farmed fish provide 17% of protein eaten globally. Nearly 3 billion people depend on fish for 20% or more of their protein intake. Healthy ecosystems can act as a buffer between humans and extreme weather events and natural hazards.
