5. 5 christ crowning the emperor constantine vii (c. 945) In this official diptych, christ is standing on a foot stool crowning constantine. Vii: constantine was interested in looking back to ancient forms, called carolingian renaissance- looking backwards, a period of retrospection and strength of new artistic creation. Compare to the veroli casket rosetta casket used as dowry chests, hold money and documents- rosettes enclosing ancient statuary and scenes from the ancient world. Christ was crucified; surrounding it are compartments and a glass window: behind the glass is a window. Piece of the crown of thorns, of the virgins belt, of the cloth of the washing of the feet, and hair of john the baptist, christ"s purple robe. This mode of prayer was widespread in byzantium.
