Document Summary

We can use this to measure (cid:28660) (cid:28675)(cid:28671)(cid:28660)(cid:28673)(cid:28664)(cid:28679)"(cid:28678) speed and direction. Blue shift: the object moves toward you, a shorter wavelength. Red shift: the object moves away from you, a longer wavelength. A moving atom: the pattern of the lines is preserved, so we can still measure the composition of the atom. Goal: to collect as much light as we can, the more detailed spectrum we can make. Result: to build a bigger telescope: refraction: bending of light, lenses focus light by refracting it to one single focus, reflection: bouncing of light, mirrors focus light by reflecting it to one focus. Two telescopes in hawaii (high and above the atmosphere): Keck telescope (each 10 meters across), put together by the segmented mirrors, some of the best telescopes. People plan to build a thirty-meter telescope that will be the last telescope built here.
