Document Summary
Image of the day: plankton off the coast of argentina. Blooms a lot during spring and summer. Can have a lot of local effects. Coriolis effects the direction of the wind but not the speed. Suppose we are in the northern hemisphere, moving with the wind and the coast is on the left. Then water will be transported to the right of the wind, and away from the coast by the ekman drift. Deep water will be pulled up to compensate for the lost surface water. Returning now to this satellite image we can infer what direction the surface winds were blowing during this upwelling event. The sea surface temperature off the coast of namibia and south africa. A ribbon of cold water along the coast is clearly evident. Winds blowing in this case is southerly. The ekman drift also drives equatorial upwelling. Near the equator trade winds blow toward the west (easterly wind)
