Social science to help & explain human behavior. Interdisciplinary social science that relies heavily on *sociology, anthro, linguistics, etc. Deals with everyday life, not much theories. Ex. of things governed by norms: dating, mass communication. Folkways: generally conform with little pressure to do so. Ex) wearing matching socks, no tux at mcdonald"s, talking when introduced to someone. Mores: held to the population stronger, breaking them creates a stronger reaction. Ex) laws (not exploding buildings and using violence against ppl to make a statement), wife & husband playing naked in the yard. Incest, necrophilia, things that make ppl generally freak out & be disgusted. Phonecall: men call, not women (has changed) How long to wait to call after getting #: 3 days is normal, too soon is desperate & vice versa (reasons for social norms) When to call for a weekend date: no later than wed. if going out on fri, control & power issues.
