Hereditary trait that spreads thru population by natural selection, replaces alternative trait in species. Mutation must be more effective than the alternative. Species in diff lineages live in similar environ -> similar selection pressures -> adopt same solution/adaptations to deal with that environ. Safety in #s, swamping ability of predators to consume prey. Predators will take advantage of prey saturation but single prey chance of being targeted is reduced. Benefit: use companion as living shield for protection. Safer spread out but social behavior of self interest wins. Decisions = game played by competitors, best strategy has most offspring. Payoffs to indivs of one behavior are dependent on behavior of others in the group. Tephritid wing/fly experiment: both behavior and wing pattern needed for deception to work. Traits w/ best benefit to cost ratio persist over time. If b >> c for a trait, then it is an adaptation that will spread at expense of other alleles/traits.
