Document Summary

Underwater marine flowering vascular plants (secondarily marine) Rhizome: continuously growing horizontal underground stem that generates lateral shoots and adventitious roots. Reproduction: asexual fragmented rhizomes disperse and create new patches of seagrass, sexual flowers and seeds, important after severe disturbances. Adaptations: grow while submerged, adapt to salinity, anchor system, submarine pollination mech, ability to compete. Don"t need nitrogen fertilization b/c they have own built in nitrogen fertilization from symbiotic microbes. Found in shallow coastal areas in tropics and temperate areas (sub-polar region to tropics) Light: high light penetration needed, shallowness, eutrophication, turbulence all affect, adaptations: broader shorter blades in deep waters, long thin blades in turbulent waters. Salinity: affects growth rate and disease resistance as well as distribution, marsh grass at mouth of river, seagrass is closer to mouth of estuary since they require higher salinity. Substrate type: though they are adapted to a lot of different kinds. Natural: hurricanes cause scouring and uprooting, outbreaks of sea urchin (predators)
