EE BIOL 109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Cold Seep, Hydrogen Sulfide, Brine Pool
Document Summary
Lecture 14 continental shelf and deep sea. 80% deposit feeders, 7% suspension feeders, rest = omnivores/scavengers/carnvores bioturbation reworks surface sediments. Allows for succession of deep sea sediments metabolic rate decreases with depth. Bioluminescence: photophores glandular cells/culture luciferin + luciferase, ~70% mesopelagic orgs, used for communication, protection from predators, mechanically induced - shear light gathering eyes, retinas focus light differently (near and far objects) Hydrothermal vents sea mounts: black smokers cold seeps. Black smokers vents that spew sulfur bearing mineral. Water seeps into cracks at thin areas where spreading occurs: water heats up and expands, exits thru other cracks + dissolves minerals in crust at same time, water interacts with cold water and minerals precipitate cold seeps. Brine pools of high salt -> osmotic balance chalange. Near areas of active geology (subduction zone, continental margins) Hydrogen sulfide, methane, hc seep thru sediments. Methane, hc used by microbes to produce co2, hydrogen sulfide.
