EPS SCI 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Echo Sounding, Galilean Moons, Seismic Tomography
Document Summary
L e c t u r e 1 8. Crust: hot, low density: stands up high above ocean bottom. Seismic tomography: slabs descending to core mantle boundary. Also on mars (circular & linear offset): transform fault. Plate tectonics: necessary for the development of new, complex life forms. Could be used to detect habitable planets. Recycling of key nutrients (bacterial to multicellu- lar) Generates magnetic eld, de ects solar wind (convection of mantle) Need landers on planets, cannot be done from earth. Probing planetary interiors with seismology: need cold, brittle crust ~can- not be done on jupiter. Data collected over 8 years: lunar seismic events on the moon due to: meteor impacts, astronaut noise, moonquakes (mostly deep focus, deep events from a partial spherical shell) Venus (volcanism, but this atmosphere = dif cult to penetrate) Galilean moons (io: most active body in the solar system / europe: ice tectonics / callisto: cratering)
