EPS SCI 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Seafloor Spreading, Linear Map, Jigsaw Puzzle
Document Summary
One of the main activities of oceanologists is tracing the development of the ocean basins since their formation on earth. Ocean basins refer to the large part of the ocean"s foor that lies deeper than. Even though these basins are huge and are made of rock, their shape and size change slowly over time. Across enormous time spans, such as millions of years, rocks no longer appear rigid but move slowly because of the high temperatures and pressures that exist inside the earth. They to oo are wandering across the globe and moving constantly over millions of years. Even though maps portray continents as rigid, geologic time portrays them as slowly moving across the earth. The reason for this is continental drift. believe it or not, the continents have boundaries that seem to fit each other just like they would a geometirc puzzle.
