E&S SCI 9 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Late Heavy Bombardment, Billion Years, Kuiper Belt
Document Summary
These cores attract gravitationally helium and hydrogen satellites and ring systems form out of a surrounding disk. Rocky planets use up most of nearby material in dis. Solids inside the snow line were just rock and metal. The gas giants formed beyond the snow line. Therefore, their cores were able to trap water ice as well as rock & metal. Partly because of the extra ice, they were able to grow large. Giant planet growth was ended basically by running out of gas to pull in. The growth times were longer at larger distances because the density of the disk decreased outwards. It is harder to collide planetesimals together to grow the cores when the disk density is low. One idea is that jupiter & saturn might have entered a resonance . A small applied force can build up large oscillations. If a disturbing force is applied at the natural period, a large amplitude motion can build up.
