Natives learned musical instruments (western style) through churches (piano) and boarding schools. Early crystal radios allowed listening in rural and reservation areas in the 1920s, primarily cowboy sounds and hillbilly music (predecessor of county music), also church music. Comes form this musical tradition that started in the late 1800s in the us. World war ii brought reservation peoples into integrated units and contact with southern whites who taught them the country/hillbilly styles. They were mostly in all native units in wwi, but in wwii got mixed up more. Had most in common with people from rural areas- they showed them country music. When the soldiers returned home they formed their bands on reservations and played covers, primarily of country music. Part narragansett, son of anthropologist/author oliver la farge.
