Locals became slaves on the sugar plantations: 1838: emancipation, 1962: independence from great britain, 1960s: economic growth, 1970s: increasing economic inequality. Ska: 1959-1964, developed during jamaican 1962 independence. Ska involved with jamaican nationalism => more separate from outside influence: focused on ghetto street culture knowns as rudeness . Very well-dressed gangsters loose suit with extra cloth to move easily: emphasizes beats 2 and 4 offbeats .
