The distinction of high and low culture was prominent in the us, forging of a national culture was beginning in the 19th century. Looked to art and music as models of what could constitute culture . Folk music- began in caribbean and africa- repreatore formed into folk music. Music presented in america"s first halls- blackface shows and vaudeville.
