Document Summary

Whiteness is an ideology, about certain people being the privileged group in society. Whiteness is not about individuals, not about blaming individuals, but about understanding history and society and ideology. If you understand those things, individuals can be aware of what their racial status means and what advantages they derive from racial status. Rather than thinking about race in terms of prejudice, the study/ideas/theoretical framework of whiteness is that those are structural issues. Whiteness doesn"t need to be intentional or conscious for it to be true. The ways in which this racial hierarchy operates in society to treat people differently. Behaviors, decisions, jobs, housing, access to schools: people get or don"t get based on position in society is connected to racial location. Inequitable distribution of power and privilege by race. Some people got subsidized housing loans to make housing possible. Homeowners were barred from selling their homes to nonwhites. The access to suburbs were allowed by government; freeways.
