No sh has had more impact on civilization than the atlantic cod. They inhabit cool waters on both sides of the atlantic. Large shops and technology have over shed the cod. Cod populations shrank in the 1980s and crashed in the early 1990s. Some stocks dropped to just 10% of their former levels. Fishing for cod was temporarily banned in numerous sheries. Cod shing was a major source of employment and income for many areas along the atlantic coast. Governments paid people for some of their lost wages when shing cod was banned. Even with the ring ban, stocks of cod were not recovering. A 2011 study showed that cod stocks were nally beginning to recover.
