All the soil is black and loamy, and is capable of producing every kind of grain and fruit which may be planted it has all the requisites for a large settlement (la river, chinatown) - father juan crespi, Because they found good soil, they founded mission san gabriel (1771) La natives became the (cid:128)rst farm labors. Most farming today can trace their roots back to that mission. They got people from mexico and every person got a set amount of lands and goods to help them start out as farmers.
