GEOG 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Parks Reserve Forces Training Area, Cultural Geography, Exmilitary
Document Summary
Recap: finish discussion of nature, move on to discussion of borders . National parks in africa: internationally valued forms of nature. Parks are often protected/fenced by military, shoot-to-kill poachers. Fortress conservation: an approach to conservation that aims to preserve wildlife and their habitat through forceful exclusion (often using military means) of local people who have traditionally relied on the environment in question for their livelihoods. In most cases conservationists (biologists, ngos, environmentalists) establish protected areas in nations in the global south (east africa is a key site) ( spatial enclaving or hot spot approach) Local people in an area designated as a protected area (national park, nature reserve, or game area) are evicted from their homes and forcibly relocated. They are usually given little or no subsidies or assistance, and are often left in poverty and with great resentment. Nature is asocial free from human impact and activity.
