Document Summary

The trials of the confederation in the 1780s. Common feature: some group or league of sovereign states which came together in a common government to discuss issues. We have the ability as states to make laws for ourselves which can trump parliamentary law. Was always a sense that they would have some kind of national government. Develop articles of confederation -agreement to formalize the powers of the government. Lots of prominent people are complaining about the continental congress. Was not getting enough funding from the states. American government is having the same problem raising revenue from the states as the english government did from the colonie s. Kind of still surrounded by european imperial powers. Fear that the union would fall apart into regional confederacies; that the spanish and the british would make alliances and p ick them apart.
