Document Summary

Patriots called them tories (linked to the people in england who were defending royal power and the absolute monarchy) Servile people who just want to be ruled and governed; don"t understand what it means to be free. Loyalists were not just elites but from all levels of british american society. They were whigs, too (people in the british world who support constitutional monarchy and the glorious revolution) No loyalists until 1774-1776 because that was when the choice was to stay with or leave the empire. Lots of loyalists thought that british actions were misguided. If you didn"t say a document saying that you liked the continental congress, you were deemed a traitor. You"re better off if you remain under a british monarchy; king and the house of lords and the commons give a balanced government.
