Multi faceted process whereby former colonies achieve their political liberation and right to self government. Slave revolt in haiti (independence in 1804) England grants decolonization in caribbeans, jamaica, trinidad. Provides model to show what decolonization should look like. Kwame nkrumah: argued people of african descent need to unite. Called for establishment for continental gov of africa. Reliance outside of european structures that promoted colonial rule. Best way to become independent was to become a nation state and join un. Boundaries of african nation states are drawn arbitrarily. Duara: decolonization is not the breakdown of empires and is more just reconfiguration or local power shifts in specific colonies. Post colonial powers transfer institutional legal control over their territories to individual nation states. Political: right to create your own government; protecting borders. National division of labor (mcmichael): within the boundaries of a single nation state, the division of labor is occurring within those confines. Manufacturing industrial goods in european colonial centres.
