Sits on the intersection of 4+ tectonic plates geologic upheaval. Steep mountain ranges vs. fertile plains: tsukushi plain (northern kyushu) social/tech development, honshu: kinai plain (nara & kyoto), nobi plain, kanto plain (surrounds tokyo) Weather : winter: snow on northwestern sides, dry winds on pacific coast, summer: early rain. Northward warm current (kuroshio) & southward cool current (oyashio) mix together to provide variety of food sources on pacific coast. Biological diversity due to varied temperatures and terrain.
