Sign language is also a cultural result, leading to different signs. Many asl signs are abstract, jsl is more iconic. Sometimes in asl there are compounds, but in others it could be only one sign. He coined the term cherology, the sign language equivalent of phonology. But sign language linguists, though he was the first, now generally used the term phonology. In 1965, he published a book, claiming that asl was a language. The five parameters: location, movement, facial expression, handshape, palm orientation. Asl changes over time and evolves naturally, but is not subject to personal changes.
