LIFESCI 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Zygote, Middle Ages, Saprotrophic Nutrition
Document Summary
Each sporangium (stalk) release thousands of spores. Turgor pressure at the end of the stalk and at the end of stalk are the spores. As the turgor pressure builds up, it ejects the spore cap. Evolved complex multicellular fruiting bodies that are only present during sexual reproduction. Smut: spores of fungus grow within the kernel of the corn. Must treat corn seeds with fungicide to kill fungal spores before they are planted. Rust: some rusts induce pseudoflowers to form in plants (no pollen) The fungal rust causes the plant to create a flower without any reproductive abilities (no reproductive flowers) Pollinators will fly around the flower and transport the spore of the fungus. 90% of wheat has no resistance to this fungal rust. 99% of wheat strains are not resistant. As the fungus spreads, the crops are wiped out. First identified in uganda and now spreading to other areas of high wheat production. Mycelium spores dispersal and germination mycelium repeat.
