Week 10 lecture 19- flourishing in our alien industrial environment. We don"t have the capacity to produce our own food, medicine, shoes, contact lenses, houses, sanitation systems, etc. Everything is produced in mass and taken care of for us by others. Today"s environment is alien, very different from the eea. Our eea: small groups with unpredictable food supply. Our environment is alien but our culture can help us to survive. Culture- transmission of information by extra-cellular means. Through communication, information spreads quickly and does not necessarily have to spread down genetic relatedness lines. Therefore, culture can free us from biology. Innate- things you were born with, are not learned. Our environment is very alien to our brains. But culture is constrained by biology- the tension between us and our genes persists. Constrained learning models- rats drinking water: drink water noise and lights electric shock.
