Document Summary

Axon (long thing attached to soma): where information or electrical impulses go out of the cell. Composed of billions of neural cell bodies. Bundle of axons (or white matter) that connects the two hemispheres. Visual stimulus in right visual field goes into the left hemisphere through the corpus callosum and then processed in the right hemisphere. Phrenology: feeling and measuring bumps on the skull. Thought it was possible to measure different aspects of one"s personality through these bumps. Introduced idea of localization (correct idea) that different parts of your brain are dedicated to different cognitive function. Lateralization: (language is lateralized to the left hemisphere) Different sounds are played in both ears simultaneously. Subjects report hearing only one sound, usually from the right ear. Seems to be a strong left hemisphere preference for auditory processing or language. Someone whose left and right hemispheres are split and the sides cannot communicate with each other (corpus callosum is cut)
