Retrovirus ctd & hiv: consequences of integration. Persistence: not easily cleared (part of it has to do with cell types); long-lived reservoir of infected cells; integrated provirus. Latency: integrated, but silent proviruses not seen by immune system. Some of the cells not actively expressing virus. Integrated virus quiet & not producing anything, no reason for immune system to attack. As long as cell"s around, potential for cell to come back. So infection is chronic & no cure (once infected, virus is part of you) Transformation: location of integration can unintentionally drive cell proliferation and initiate transformation. Endogenous retroelements: integration in germline leads to vertical transmission of retroviral genome. Most of cells they integrate in will die, but occasionally integration goes germline. > vertical transmission (just dna at this point) Not actively replicating for the most part (otherwise would have killed the cell) Our genome is 50% genetic material thought to be related to retroviruses.
