MCD BIO 60 Lecture Notes - Lecture 99: Epigenetics, Q Source, Orthopedic Surgery
Document Summary
Genetic engineering, disease, paternalism, role of ethics in science. Types of engineering: somatic genetic therapy (sgt) Germline genetic enhancement (gge: somatic: targets stem cells only affects patients receiving the intervention. Germline: affects individual receiving treatment as well as their germline (future gens: therapy: treats/cures/prevents disease (ex: brca mutation more likely to develop breast cancer, so intervention here prevents disease and is thus therapy) Enhancement: modifications to make you better, not related to disease. What is morally legitimate: usually, people say therapies are morally okay, but enhancements are problematic. They are no longer about treatment of disease and thus have no moral good about them. Some alterations may not be morally permissible. People with financial resources can access such mods and thus luxuries which is not fair. Assumptions being made: we have a clear and uncontroversial understanding of what disease is, treating disease is morally legitimate and other forms of intervention are not.
