A musician is born and not made
● Chopin’s funeral march:
○ Feared and fascinated by death
● Recorded 32 Beethoven Sonatas, all available on DVD
● Plays Edward Grieg
● Where does music come from of the piano? Where does the power of Pavarati’s voice
come from?
○ Voice comes from the diaphragm. Where is the piano’s “diaphragm”? Where
does the amplification come from?
○ Playing pieces of Grieg, listen and note how a piano is a piece of engineering
made of steel and wood. From a piece of technology we can evoke emotion:
love, fire, motion
○ Bach piece...The expressiveness of the playing is where the feeling is evoked
○ A good musician is never satisfied!
■ Many musicians nowadays use Bach as a foundation
● Fuges: like a conversation
● Layering of voices
● Horowitz was able to make people arware of voices
● Mozart’s sonata is in galant style: his kind of music was the kind
that was uncontroversal; never offended anyone
