PHILOS 3 Lecture 3: Lect3-Philosophy as Training for Death 2
Document Summary
Next argument: argument of recollection (the act of remembering) Reminder of sticks can be reminded about equality. When i see imperfectly equal sticks, i am applying knowledge of perfect equality. How a guitar (common item, found anywhere) or any guitar can remind you of someone that plays the instrument, even if your friend has never used this specific guitar before. This can only be done when the soul is within a body. Bodily experience is not the source of the knowledge that experience causes to remember. The equal, the just, the good, the beautiful and so on cannot be seen or experienced. These capitals aren"t bodily and material so we don"t physically get it. Therefore our knowledge of them must have been acquired. Argument for recollection: we have knowledge of the equal itself. Either we are born with such prior knowledge and know it throughout life, without having to acquire it after birth: such as knowledge would be innate.
