Document Summary

Physci 400 week 10 lect 1 part 2. Lymphoid tissues: collections of loose connective tissue and lymphocytes, example: tonsils lymphoid organs, more complex structures, contain large numbers of lymphocytes, connected to lymphatic vessels, examples: lymph nodes, spleen, thymus. Walls of small lymphatic vessels similar to veins: contain valves to maintain one-way flow, contraction of skeletal muscles around lymphatic vessels aid flow, lymph eventually empties into collecting structures called lymphatic ducts, thoracic duct, right lymphatic duct. The thymus: site of t cell production and maturation, located in mediastinum, develops to maximum size during puberty, then decreases in size, thymosin hormones made by the thymus stimulate lymphocyte maturation. Blockage of lymphatic vessels, resulting in ineffective lymphatic drainage: interstitial fluid accumulates, limb becomes swollen and distended. All cells and tissues involved in production of immunity: includes parts of several systems, integumentary, skeletal lymphatic, cardiovascular respiratory, digestive. Body defenses: two general categories of body defenses work together to provide resistance.
